The Restaurant is housed in the oldest building on Barnstaple’s Strand, overlooking the tidal river Taw and what was once a thriving port from where, in Elizabethan time galleons sailed to form part of Drake’s defence against the Spanish armada. Parts of the building date back to the 1600’s during which period it was leased by the then collector of customs, becoming Barnstaple’s old Custom House. Over the centuries the building changed hands many times, undergoing numerous additions and fulfilling a variety of roles. Following total renovation earlier in the decade, a restaurant was first opened there in 2003. In August 2008 the present restaurant was opened by chef James Duckett who was returning to his family roots following six years in Spain, four of them as owner of his own restaurant there. Before that James had spent many years working in the kitchens of some of the finest restaurants in London and internationally, in Europe, Australia, the Caribbean and the US. At dinner, the restaurant offers fine dining in a relaxed environment with a set price midweek 2/3 course dinner and at weekends an à la carte and tasting menus. There is a private dining facility for up to 22 in the upstairs, panelled dining room. Lunches are informal with a set price 2/3 course menu. In the warmer weather outside tables are available at the front of the restaurant on the Strand itself.
