I am amazed by the previous review, I understand it was two years ago but my goodness how rude about such a delightful place! I had a glorious lunch at the Compasses yesterday and I was thrilled to see they were still doing their two courses for £7.50 and it is still every bit as delicious as the last time I visited. I would recommend booking as I was very fortunate to get a table. Thank you Compasses for a wonderful meal as always.

I am shocked to read the last review, even though it was two years ago! This is the most delightful country pub that continues to serve good home made food. I went for lunch yesterday and was thrilled to see they are still doing their two course menu for £7.50. As always the Compasses delivered good food and service. The only thing I would say is book a table as I did'nt and I was lucky to get one as they were very busy! Well worth a visit and has some beautiful walks to take before or after your lunch.

We were taken as guests last Suturday and were given a welcome like a FART in a Lift. Although we arrived at the booked time we were told they were busy - would wew like to wait . We declined. They took our drinks order , but they arrived after asking at least 5 times for them , after the starters, NO offer of bread. The main corse arrived , the 2 steaks were TINY & COLD. the chips came after we had asked for them numerous times after we had all finished our meals. ( they were hot) . three desserts - VERY heavy . No charge for the steaks - BUT ££.90 for the sauce !!! Expensive , Pretentios and VERY RUDE - it was obvious that the party of 24 in a side room could make as much noise as they wanted and get good service . Our hosts were very embarrased as they had been there before and thought their previous experience could not be repeated - it wasn't THIS was worse. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE if you don't want to be treated like something on the managers shoe and get ripped off. As I was a guest I did not make a scene.

The restaurant itself was pleasant enough and the staff were friendly. The food I'm afraid was disappointing. It looked fantastic on the plate, but tasted completely bland without any seasoning and the chips were hard in the middle. No complaints with the puddings and they did do a good selection of children's meals. Would we go there again? I'm afraid not.

Great restaurant! we had wonderfull time, food was excellent and service friendly and professiona. Our children loved that place: lots of green space and plyground. Fresh, home cooked meals would make happy anyone. My husband loved great chioce of local ales and I was really impressed by wine list. We will be back soon!

please do not listen to the below review if you are going to the restaurant after this date. I took my gorlfriend tonight and i was amazed by the service and the inside is lovely. i think since the review below was written before a refurbish. The staff were very friendly and when there was a problem they had it sorted right away. The only little problm was that i used a voucher and they gave us the wrong menu with the more expensive stuff on but they realised it was their mistake and kept it at the same price. The food was delicious and was superbly impressed with the prices compared to the quality.

Despite a favourable first impression this pub was a huge disappointment. The waiting staff were surly and unhelpful, it seemed that the price of our meal did not include the cover charge for a smile! When queries were raised in respect of the meal choices offered all answers were aggressive and monosyllabic. Sadly our visit did not improve with the arrival of our food. The quintessentially simple steak and chips was ruined by a combination of overcooking and bad base ingredients. The chips were a surprising mixture of: sweet, greasy and overcooked. Unfortunately this was not the limit of the poor cuisine. My mother chose salmon; quite frankly it was tasteless, devoid of seasoning and served without any sauce/jus which may have added much needed flavour. To follow the trend, the salmon was sorrowfully overcooked. Our visit to the Compass was to check its suitability for company lunches. Unless I very much disliked my clients I would never darken the doors of this place again.
