Advantages Top quality food and service at competitive prices Disadvantages Can't think of any!!! After a day in Yorkshire's historic city of York, sightseeing and shopping on one of the hottest days of the summer, we were in need of sustenance. Leaving the shops near the Jorvik centre and walking towards Clifford's Tower and the Castle Museum, we spotted a board on the pavement advertising 31 Castlegate restaurant's evening meals. An early evening offer of two courses for £9.95 or three courses for £11.95, available until 7pm tempted us inside. Ascending a short flight of steps we arrived in the candlelit restaurant and were greeted by a very friendly waitress, who showed us to our table in the elegant dining room. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful,just the relaxing ambience we needed after a hectic day. We ordered starters from the extensive menu and while we were waiting for these to arrive we were given a plate of warm bread rolls and butter to nibble on. A pitcher of ice cold water was also welcome on such a hot day! (why don't other English restaurants offer this I wonder?) The starters were delicious, well presented and tasty! The main course was perfect but the desserts were just heavenly! Although 31 Castlegate is in the middle of York's tourist area (close to the Jorvik museum on one side and the Castle Museum and Clifford's toweron the other), you might miss it if you don't know it is there, but to do this would be to miss a wonderful gourmet dining experience in the heart of this historic city.
